Makkah to Madinah: Taxi vs Other Transportation Options

Comparing private taxi, bus, and train options for traveling from Makkah to Madinah, with pros and cons of each to help you decide.

The journey from Makkah to Madinah covers approximately 420 kilometers and takes about 4 to 5 hours by road. There are three main options for this journey: private taxi, bus, and the Haramain High Speed Railway.

A private taxi or transfer offers the most convenience. You choose the departure time, the vehicle, and the route. The driver can stop for prayer, food, or rest whenever you request. For families and groups, a private vehicle is often the most cost-effective option since the price is per vehicle, not per person.

The bus is the most economical option, with tickets starting at around 50 SAR per person. However, buses run on fixed schedules, have limited luggage space, and make multiple stops along the way. The journey can take 5 to 6 hours.

The Haramain High Speed Railway connects Makkah and Madinah via Jeddah, with the full journey taking about 2.5 hours. Trains are comfortable and fast, but you still need transportation from the train station to your hotel. During peak times, tickets sell out quickly.

For most pilgrims, especially families and groups, a private transfer offers the best balance of comfort, convenience, and value. You travel on your own schedule, in a vehicle suited to your group size, with door-to-door service.

Whichever option you choose, we recommend booking in advance, especially during peak seasons. If you choose a private transfer, we offer a range of vehicles from sedans to full-size buses, all with experienced drivers who know the route well.
